Westmeads Infant School, located within the Whitstable Town Conservation Area, identified a pressing need to expand its provision to meet rising demand for early years education. Supported by Kent County Council’s sufficiency planning, the school proposed to lower its intake age from 4–7 years to 2–7 years, establishing a purpose-built nursery.

Carré Consultancy was engaged to prepare the pre-application, design and access statement, and planning submissions for a modular facility designed to deliver high-quality, inclusive early education.

Overview

Towers School & Sixth Form Centre serves 1,460 students aged 11–19. The school’s DT Block had flat roofs exceeding 30 years in age, exhibiting widespread water ingress, delamination, and brittle roofing membranes. These defects were disrupting teaching and learning and posed a health and safety risk.

The project addressed these urgent condition issues while incorporating sustainability measures, including a 101 kWp solar PV array to reduce carbon emissions and long-term energy costs.

Overview

Sheldwich Primary, a thriving rural school, faced significant estate challenges with ageing buildings dating back to 1939 and extensions added in 1993 and 2012. Condition surveys highlighted critical risks including failing pitched roofs, obsolete boiler plant, inadequate heating controls, and safeguarding vulnerabilities around site access and boundary security.

The school, supported by Carré Consultancy, developed a phased programme of projects successfully delivered through Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) bids between 2016–2024.
