Lydd Primary School – Heating Improvements Project

Overview

Lydd Primary School’s heating system, serving multiple teaching blocks, had reached the end of its serviceable life. The ageing oil and gas boilers, together with corroded pipework and inefficient controls, posed risks of system failure and escalating maintenance costs. Carré Consultancy were appointed by OCMAT to design, procure and manage a full system replacement, with a focus on efficiency, compliance, and long-term sustainability.

Challenge

The project needed to address critical risks of heating outages while aligning with government priorities on decarbonisation. An air source heat pump (ASHP) solution was appraised as part of a costed options review. While highly sustainable, ASHP installation was deemed unfeasible at this stage due to prohibitive cost and site constraints, alongside the requirement to maintain operational resilience for a large primary school. The challenge lay in balancing urgent replacement needs with future readiness for low-carbon heating.

Solution

Carré Consultancy prepared a full technical specification and tender package in line with CIF guidance. A closed competitive tender was undertaken, securing Nixon Farrow Ltd as the preferred contractor on a cost-certainty basis. The solution adopted was a modern condensing modular boiler installation, supported by new pipework, insulation, radiators, zoning valves, and advanced digital controls integrated with a Building Management System.

Outcome

The project will deliver:-

  • Reliable, efficient heating for all teaching blocks.
  • Annual savings of approximately £10,000 through reduced maintenance and utility costs.
  • A measured energy saving of 74,000 kWh/year, equating to over 25 tonnes of CO₂ reduction.
  • Future-proofed infrastructure enabling straightforward transition to low-carbon heat sources.

Through strategic procurement and technical leadership, Carré Consultancy ensured best value, compliance with CIF requirements, and a solution that balances immediate operational needs with the school’s long-term sustainability journey.
